Movement handed down through generations
A kata is a set pattern of movements against imaginary opponents, passed down from teacher to student over generations. Practising kata trains balance, breathing, timing and focus, and keeps the fighting principles of the art alive.
At EmptyHands, kata are taught in the classical Shotokan tradition, following a syllabus inspired by the late Hirokazu Kanazawa Sōke. Each grade adds a new kata, building from simple patterns to the advanced forms needed for black belt.
