Where kata becomes self-defence
Bunkai means “analysis” or “taking apart”. Students break a kata down into its movements and practise them with a partner, discovering the blocks, strikes and counters hidden inside each sequence.
Working slowly and with control, students learn the distance, timing and angles that make a technique effective. Bunkai links kata to kumite and to real-life self-defence, and is explored further in the EmptyHands Self-Defence Scenarios workshops.
